Berkshire Heraldry: Letter C

CHAFFIN
This family are prolific and well-known in the Wiltshire/Dorset border area. They lived at Chettle House. They don't have much of a connection with Berkshire, but did inherit the manor of Maiden Earley (Sonning) in the early 16th century. They held it until selling up during the Civil War, but are unlikely to have visited very often.
CHERRY
The name was originally De Cheries and they came from Picardy. In the 15th century, they settled in Northamptonshire, later moving on to North Kilworth in Leicestershire. Thomas Cherry was living in Maidenhead & Bray in the early 17th century. His descendants became Lords of the Manors of white Waltham & Shottesbrook.
CHEYNEY
A prolific family in both Wiltshire & Berkshire, there was also a family, probably related in Buckinghamshire. They hailed from Shirland in the Isle of Sheppey (Kent) and the Shirland arms was sometimes used as an alternative to that shown here. West Woodhay House, which they built in 1635, was their chief residence. They were there at the HV of 1666.
CHOKE
The Chokes of Avington Park were originally from Long Ashton in Somerset. The later family stemmed from a sub-branch in Westbury in the same county. They appeared in both the Heralds' Visitation of 1566 & 1666 where an alternative coat arms of wavy red & white lines is also displayed.
CYFREWAST
This was an old family from Clewer, found marrying into many local families. They owned the manor from at least 1197 until the name died out in 1441. Their heirs were the Laken family of Bray. The final heiress has a brass memorial there, but only her husband, Sir Willia laken, now survives.
