Berkshire Heraldry: Letter E

EARLEY
of Earley.
The family also held estates in Dorset. The scallop shells no doubt derive from those of St. James whose hand was kept at Reading Abbey.
ENGLEFIELD
of Englefield & Earley
A great heraldic family of Berkshire. They lived at Englefield from the reign of King Edgar until evicted for their Catholic beliefs. They moved to Whiteknights in Earley, but continued to be buried at Englefield.
EYSTON
of East Hendred.
These residents of Hendred House are the most ancient family in Berkshire still living at their original manor.
